We Could Be So Good by Cat Sebastian

Synopsis

In 1950s New York, veteran newspaper reporter Nick Russo has spent his whole career keeping people at arm’s length, terrified of what being found out could cost him. Then Andy Fleming — the newspaper owner’s charming, scattered son — gets dropped into the newsroom to learn the family business, and Nick can’t help but take him under his wing. Their friendship deepens fast, into something neither of them can safely name in public. Set against a hostile era for gay men, it’s a story about building a life and a love worth having, even when the world outside says you can’t.

Why We Loved It

Meg loves a historical that isn’t set in Regency, and a 1950’s NYC newsroom was such an unexpected setting — especially in a time period when homosexuality is outlawed and punishable by 30 days of imprisonment … yet at the same time, The Village Voice was advocating for queer rights.

And the plot was delightful: Nick as a gay man whose in love with his oblivious best friend Andy, who grappled ith his own Identity Disco during a time when gay relationships can’t be public, so they sort of went through friends –> roommates –> lovers in order to make itw work.
