First Dates & Soulmates Romance Book Recommendations
The internet is crawling with book recommendation listicles. Some are just grids of images (where you literally have to judge a book by its cover). Some are generated by publishers to only share the authors they represent. Others are built by algorithmic tagging (like people shelving books on Goodreads), which can tell you “grumpy sunshine hockey romance” … but it can’t tell you the third-act breakup felt unearned, or that the banter never quite lands, or that the quirky best friend needs a spinoff stat.
Here’s how we’re different:
We hand-selected every single books on these lists … because one of us has read each of them.
Yes, we also check the keyword data and track trends. (Meg does this professionally.) But we’re not building any lists that we can’t back up with our own opinions. No matter how popular the topic, if we don’t read it or have anything to add to what’s already out there, we don’t publish it.
And our lists aren’t just traditionally published romance. We include picks by indie and BIPOC authors with diverse character representation. That means lots of queer, gay, and sapphic picks, even i categories that are traditionally straight-leaning.
Every pick below traces back to a specific podcast with our honest opinions, real-time reactions, and reasons we love that book, and a link to the podcast so you can hear the full conversation.
Many books show up in more than one list on purpose, because good books don’t hit only one trope or archetype or identity. Their plots multi-faceted and nuanced, just like their characters.
Want our full-length take on one specific book instead of a list? That’s what Reviews are for.

Werewolf Romance Books
Vampire romance keeps doing something most genres won’t: making the actual predator the love interest. Four archetypes, one century-old trope.
Beach Reads & Vacation Romance: 20+ Books for Your Next Trip
Most “books like Heated Rivalry” lists stop at “More hockey!”
But hockey isn’t why the Heated Rivalry works … or at least not the only reason.
Professor-Student Romance Books
This is a trope that makes both of us wince. Neither of us actively seek it out, because the power dynamics can feel pretty squicky, but we'll read it from an author we trust —...
Book Recommendations After Heated Rivalry (Beyond Just Hockey Romance)
Most “books like Heated Rivalry” lists stop at “More hockey!”
But hockey isn’t why the Heated Rivalry works … or at least not the only reason.
Ace & Asexual-Spectrum Romance Books
Asexual and demisexual representation is rare in romance. These are the books we’ve read that get it right.
Lesbian & Sapphic Romance Books
Sapphic romance doesn’t get the shelf space it’s earned. The demand pipeline that funds gay and mainstream straight romance hasn’t caught up — so we went looking anyway.
Queer & Bisexual Awakening Romance Books
The easiest onramp into queer romance is usually a bi-awakening — because the character starts exactly where a new reader might: certain they already know who they are.
Paranormal Romance Books
Vampires, shifters, witches, ghosts, demons, and every darkly magical lover in between — but paranormal plays by one rule that sets it apart from fantasy.
Vampire Romance Books
Vampire romance keeps doing something most genres won’t: making the actual predator the love interest. Four archetypes, one century-old trope.
Gay Sports Romance Books & Series
Every “best gay sports romance” list online recommends nearly the same ten books in a different order. We found the ones that aren’t on anyone else’s list yet.
Fake Dating Romance Books
Fake dating is absurd on the surface: two people pretending to be in love for convenience. The books that work are the ones that move beyond that premise.
Second Chance Romance Novels
A second chance only works if you believe two things: the first relationship mattered, and whatever broke it has genuinely changed. These are the ones that earn both.
Friends to Lovers Books
Friends to lovers only works if you believe the friendship was real, and that risking it was worth it. Childhood, gay, and historical picks that earn it.
Holiday Romance Books
Every year, holiday lists fill up with the same handful of traditionally published releases. We went looking for the queer and indie picks nobody else covers.
Himbo Romance Books
The himbo doesn’t have walls to break down — he shows up already good. The romance is watching someone else finally get to exhale around him.
Rockstar Romance Books
There’s something about falling for a musician — the single lyric that changes everything, the late-night jam session, the thrill of being chosen from a crowd.
