Synopsis

Ellis and Lucky have been inseparable since Lucky moved in next door when they were kids — Ellis quiet and selectively mute, Lucky wild, out, and destined to leave their small town behind. When Lucky finally does leave to chase his dreams as a photojournalist, Ellis stays behind, certain that loving Lucky means never trying to hold on to him. Years of long-distance calls, visits, and unsent letters later, Lucky comes home — and Ellis has to decide whether it’s finally time to say what he’s never said.

Why We Loved It

One of Meg’s favorite books ever. (And not just because she has a kiddo with a communication disorder…)

Childhood best friends — Lucky is an openly gay photographer who travels the world, but never forgets about Ellis Back home.

Ellis has has never left home… and never forgotten about Lucky. He’s neurodivergent, has selective mutism, and is coded as asexual, until he realizes that his feelings are specifically, only for his best friend.

Hear Meg’s full gushing rave review when she gave it a 2025 Tingly award.
